KUCHING: Sarawakians have been reminded to take extra care, especially during this hot season which is expected to last until the month of August as the prevailing hot weather can cause several heat-related illnesses.
The advice came from Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian who said: “Did you notice that recently in the month of March in Kuching, the weather was very wet and caused several areas to be hit by flash floods?
“Then suddenly in April, we had so many hot days and haze. This is what we call climate change,” he said in a video message posted on his Facebook page.
On the problems relating to the hot weather, Dr Sim said among the symptoms to watch out for are confusion, disorientation, slurred speech, hot and dry skin, including fever.
“So, how can we look after ourselves during this hot weather? Stay in shaded and cool places, keep hydrated by drinking enough water, wear light clothing, and also shower to cool down,” advised the doctor.
On another note, he also said one can stay protected against the haze by putting on the N95 type mask.
“Wear the N95 face mask because the particles are small where an ordinary face mask cannot stop the particles from getting into the lungs,” said Dr Sim.
