MUKAH: The Sarawak government should look into the possibility of setting up a Sarawak oil and gas fund.
Suarah Petrol Group (SPG) media communications and legal director Yusuf Abdul Rahman, who made this suggestion, reasoned that to ensure sustainable income from oil and gas, it was necessary for Sarawak to move a portion of the income to non-oil and gas investments.
“So, when the oil and gas run out, we will still have income ― which actually started from our oil and gas. These investments need to be properly managed so that future generation of Sarawakians will benefit,” he said.
Yusuf was speaking at a forum themed ‘Fight for Our Rights, Fight it Right’ on the history and future of Sarawak’s oil and gas, organised by SPG at Sarawak State Library in Kuching last Saturday.
His suggestion, like any other suggestion before this, definitely warrants a thorough study and if necessary, be put up for debate at the State Legislative Assembly sitting.
The ball now is in the state government’s court.
