KUCHING: More than 30,000 people from all walks of life attended the Aidilfitri open house hosted by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and his wife Puan Sri Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang at Pullman Hotel here today.
Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Ragad Kurdi Taib also joined the open house, which was held from 10am to 3pm.
The event was successfully organised with control measures under the standard operating procedure (SOP) and went on smoothly despite the huge turnout.
Many were eager to meet the Premier and other state leaders to exchange greetings, while some had grabbed the opportunity to have a selfie with Abang Johari before entering the hall where a buffet was served. Meanwhile, duit raya were handed out to children as well.
Duin Kuni, 53-years-old from Pengkalan Quop/Kuap, Kota Samarahan, described the open house as an auspicious and meaningful event.
“Although the location of the event is quite far from my home, it doesn’t stop me from coming to meet our Premier, who’s well-loved and respected by many Sarawakians, including myself. So, I want to come see him today,” he said.
Duin, who is also disabled, said he was proud and happy to be present at the event and to experience the cheerful atmosphere, among the multiracial society, especially after two years of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“After two years, finally the people of Malaysia are happy to celebrate Hari Raya, it has been what we’ve all wanted” he added.
Durin, who came with his family, also told the reporters that he had gone to the Head of State Tun Pehin Seri Abdul Taib Mahmud’s open house at Borneo Convention Center Kuching yesterday.
Meanwhile, Richard Buda, the gold medallist for the Paralympian in 2016 athletic category, had travelled from Serian to attend the open house event.
“Finally, we are able to enjoy some relaxation in this festive season. And I love the food at the event… We are really happy to be able to join the celebration with everyone here today, regardless of race and religion,” he added.
