SERIAN: Two locals, believed to be the brains behind the smuggling of foreigners into Sarawak, and three Indonesians were arrested along the Serian-Tebedu road on Thursday (Oct 29).

In a statement, district police chief DSP Aswandy Anis said a team from the Sarawak Contingent Police Headquarters (IPK) special branch made the arrest around 8am.

They arrested the five male suspects on the roadside at Kampung Tubih Behem.

He noted that the locals aged 38 and 46 were arrested under Section 26A of the Anti-Trafficking in Person and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act (Atipsom) 2007.

“They were taken to the Tebedu police station for investigation.”

DSP Aswandy warned the public not to get involved in smuggling activities of any kind.

Stern action will be taken under Atipsom on any individual or group caught involved in such activities.

“Should members of the community have any information on smuggling activities, they should channel them to the police so that appropriate action can be taken.
