KUCHING: Hundreds of people went for Covid-19 screening at Dewan Suarah, Kota Samarahan yesterday.
This followed an announcement by the Samarahan Divisional Health Office calling on those who attended the Sarawak Islamic Council’s Wawasan Ummah Gemilang roadshow at Dewan Suarah, Kota Samarahan on March 10, those who had contacts with the SMK Kota Samarahan cluster, Good News Fellowship cluster and individuals having close contact with Covid-19 patients to go for the screening.
State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) deputy chairman Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said many people had come forward since yesterday morning.
“Those who went for the screening were those from the cluster identified by the health office,” he told a press conference on the daily Covid-19 update yesterday.
Abdul Karim hoped that with the measure, the outbreak could be better controlled in Kota Samarahan.
“This is the same for other clusters as well or those who have close contacts with Covid-19 patients. They must be screened despite not showing any symptoms of the virus,” he said.
In the meantime, SDMC has updated the Covid-19 red zones — areas with more than 41 positive cases recorded — in Kuching and Samarahan Divisions.
In areas under the jurisdiction of Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), 65 positive Covid-19 cases had been identified in 26 locations.
In the Kuching City South Council (MBKS) areas, there were 46 positive cases in 32 locations.
In the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) areas, 16 cases have been reported in 12 locations.
In Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) areas, there were 25 cases at 14 locations.
“The infection rate in Kota Samarahan is increasing. Closer monitoring and tighter control are needed in the area to contain spread of the virus,” said Abdul Karim.
