KUCHING: The Sarawak eSports contingent’s quest for gold remains alive after eFootball player Hazwan Faiq Hailwan advanced to the semi-finals of the tournament today.

The 21-year-old secured his spot by defeating Pahang’s Muhammad Hafiy Mohd Ramlan 2-1 in the quarterfinals.

In the first quarterfinal match, Pahang took a 1-0 victory, scoring in the 91st minute. Hazwan responded by winning the second match 1-0 with a goal in the 47th minute.

With the score tied at 1-1, a decider match was held to determine who would advance.

Hazwan put Sarawak ahead in the 8th minute, then doubled the lead in the 25th minute, and sealed the win with a third goal in the 70th minute.

Sarawak will face Kedah’s Muhammad Hariz Hazmi Hakimin in the semi-finals at 2 pm today.

Earlier, Hazwan reached the quarterfinals by eliminating Perak’s Luqman Nur Hakim Ahmad Fadzil in the knockout stage with a 2-0 sweep.

He won the first match 2-0 and clinched a dramatic victory in the second match with a goal in the 112th minute of extra time after a poor clearance by Perak.

Meanwhile, Sarawak’s other eFootball player Mohammad Khafiman Sofian was eliminated in the knockout stage by Terengganu’s Muhammad Hazimi Mohd Iskandar Zulkarnien.

Hazimi secured the win by taking both matches, 3-1 and 1-0.
