KUCHING: During the fasting month, many people find unique and rare delicacies at the Ramadan Bazaar that are not usually available.
During Ramadan, you can indulge in delights like kuih bongkol, tepung pelita, suntong tutok (dried cuttlefish), roti john, and even beverages such as honeydew melon.
The New Sarawak Tribune spoke with some of the bazaar goers on their must buy food or drinks every time they are heading to Ramadan Bazaar.
ZAIMIE RAMLIE, 26
Roti John, an omelette sandwich with either beef or chicken as the filling, is a must buy dish whenever I go to the Ramadan Bazaar. Every day I will buy chicken and beef roti john for iftar. This is definitely my go-to choice during this Ramadan because there are not many options for Roti John when it is not the fasting month.
ALLY BARTISHA, 24, and RUBY RUTH, 24
One of the main focuses when I visit the Ramadan bazaar is none other than the beverages that are available. Beverages like honeydew, watermelon among others are always what we are aiming to buy whenever we go to this type of bazaar. Aside from apam balik of course, even though apam balik is always available throughout the year.
ZALINA ZAINAL ABIDIN, 42
Even though I often cook at home for breaking fast, I always look forward to visiting the bazaar with my family. I always buy the lok lok (fried food cut into small pieces), or the food stick because my children love them and I often buy them in a large portion. I do understand that the price is getting more costly compared to last year but I am okay with it because the Ramadan Bazaar is only for a month.
KHATIJAH SABU, 43
Usually when I visit the Ramadan bazaar, the kuih bongkol will be the one I am looking forward to buy. Kuih bongkol is a rare delicacy to find and it is only available during the month of Ramadan. Apart from that, I have always buy the fruit flavoured drinks, and even rojak buah and compared to last year, I am a bit surprised that the price is higher than ever. That being said, I will continue to buy but in a smaller size because I understand the rareness of this dish that is available.
