PUTRAJAYA: The new chief commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Latheefa Beebi Koya, has pledged to look into long-term actions, including the education aspect, for creating a culture of no tolerance for corruption.

She said it was the basic right of every Malaysian to be allowed to live, work and prosper in a corrupt-free environment.

“With the help of Allah SWT, I hope to succeed in this task,” she said in a statement issued today on her first full day at the job.

Latheefa, whose appointment is on a two-year contract effective June 1, said there had been many opinions regarding her appointment.

“Anyone has the right to question, criticise or express their views; it does not matter.

“My job is clear and it is to fight corruption in all places,” she said.

Latheefa added that with the support and backing of the people and MACC officers, she was confident that the commission could transform Malaysia into a society that was not corrupt and graft-free.

In recent days, many leaders, even those from the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government, had said that Latheefa’s appointment was in conflict with PH’s 14th general election manifesto. – Bernama
