SRI AMAN: Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Women chief Datuk Seri Doris Sophia Brodie will be facing three contenders in a four-cornered fight for the Sri Aman parliamentary seat this 15th General Election (GE15).

Among her opponents are Independent candidate Datuk Masir Kujat, Wilson Esabang of Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) and Tay Wei Wei of Pakatan Harapan (PH).

Doris is contesting under the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) logo and this will be her first time standing in the GE.

Independent Sri Aman incumbent Masir will be contesting using the tree symbol.

Earlier, the nomination for the Sri Aman Parliamentary constituency took place at the Indoor Stadium, Sri Aman Sports Complex nomination centre.

Before heading into the nomination centre, Doris was accompanied by a 2,000 strong group of supporters who arrived as early as 8.30am.

An elderly lady was also seen in a high spirit as she cheered loudly ‘Menang GPS’.

Among those present were PRS Youth chief and Balai Ringin assemblyman Datuk Snowdan Lawan and Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development and Simanggang Assemblyman Datuk Francis Harden Hollis.

Masir was also accompanied by a large group of supporters.

Masir had won the Sri Aman seat three times since 2008. He was a former member of PRS and PSB. He had left PSB in March this year, thus making him an independent candidate.

In the GE14, Norina Umon Utot of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) who only won a vote of 8,321 lost to Masir who managed to garner a total votes of 14,141, while Cobbold Lusoi of Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak Baru (PBDSB) received 538 votes.

Another parliamentary seat that will see a four-cornered fight is the Julau seat.

Julau incumbent Datuk Larry Sng will be defending the seat under Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM), where he is also serving as the party’s president.

The other contenders are former four-term Julau MP and PRS president Datuk Joseph Salang Gadum of GPS, Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak’s (PBDS) Susan George@Suhana Abdullah and an independent candidate Elly Lawai.

Earlier, the four candidates had submitted their nomination papers at the Julau District Old Office Building.

Meanwhile, in the GE14, Salang defended the seat but was defeated by Sng in a straight fight.

Sng who was contesting under an independent ticket secured 10,105 votes against Salang’s 8,174 and won with a 1,931- vote majority. Salang was contesting under the Barisan Nasional (BN) ticket.
