KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak’s athletics camp has delivered the state’s first gold medal at the 20th Malaysia Games (Sukma XX) here this morning (Sept 15).

Jonah Chang Rigan fulfilled expectations after putting on a stellar performance to emerge champion of the men’s shot put event at the Bukit Jalil Stadium here.

He confirmed the gold with a throw of 16.65 metres (m) in the fourth attempt.

“We have been training hard for this and it has not been easy. However, I always look to give my best and fight for Sarawak,” he told reporters here this morning.

Perlis’ Kamal Farhan A Rahman settled for silver with a 16.31m throw while Johor’s Farm Loong Deng took bronze with a throw of 15.84m.

The athletics camp also settled for bronze in the women’s discus throw event after Vanessa Niega Franky recorded a throw of 35.38m in the finals.

The gold medal was won by Johor’s Nur Atiqah Sufiah Md Hanizam’ throw of 44.99m, Pahang’ Nani Sahirah Maryata clinched the silver medal with a throw of 39.97m.
