ROCKS sometimes become popular tourist attractions, thus positively impacting the surrounding areas, which are also developed to attract tourists.
In Sarawak, for example, there is Batu Nabau, which has its own history.
Similarly, there’s the iconic rock formation known as Turus Laut Kepala Ular in Bako National Park. Equally impressive is the Batu Belimbing tourist destination in the Nyarumkop area near East Singkawang.
What’s interesting is that the granite rock, which appears to float on the surface of the lake, is described as “alive”. True to its name, this unique rock, shaped like a star fruit has undergone nature’s processes, making it resemble the fruit.
Batu Belimbing is located on the Singkawang-Bengkayang route, about 10 kilometres from the centre of Singkawang.
What makes the Batu Belimbing area attractive is its hilly terrain with vast and lush green forests.
On entering the recreational area, visitors are greeted with the beautiful scenery of Bukit Poteng @ Jempol.
According to the supervisor of the Batu Belimbing tourist spot, Hrendrik, the existence of the granite rock in Nyarumkop can be described as a natural wonder.
“The top portion enlarges, while the base gradually tapers off,” he said.
According to local residents, behind the rock, there is a Chinese inscription written in red oil paint.
“It was written several decades ago. But until now, the inscription continues to enlarge. This indicates that the rock seems to be alive and growing.”
Moreover, there’s another unique element to the rock, as its base gradually shrinks like a spinning top.
“However, the rock remains sturdy and upright, showing the power of nature, which undoubtedly demonstrates the uniqueness of the creation of the Almighty,” he added.
Therefore, over time and due to its shape resembling a starfruit, it has been dubbed Batu Belimbing.
According to historical accounts, the residents used to call the rock Batu Pulau because it stood erect in the middle of a natural lake.
Hrendrik mentioned that beneath the rock, there used to be a space that could be entered by humans, while on top of the rock, there was a hole the size of an adult in a crouched position.
As a popular tourist centre with camping activities, the location is managed by the local community.
When asked about the average number of visitors, Hrendrik said it could reach up to 500 tourists per day during holidays. They usually unwind with their families, kayaking on the lake, camping, and engaging in various activities.
“Here, there are about seven gazebos provided for relaxation with family, in addition to more than 20 micro, small, and medium entrepreneurs offering various sales, especially food, beverages, and handicrafts,” he said.
It is little wonder that the Batu Belimbing area has become an ideal location for recreational activities with family.
