BAU: Bau will become a transit hub for tourism and communication on completion of the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine, and Security Complex (ICQS) at Serikin.
Tasik Biru assemblyman Datuk Henry Harry Jinep, said a fund of RM50 million has been approved by the federal government to implement the project.
He said that on Wednesday (June 5) he held a meeting with the Public Works Department (PWD) to review the concept and design of ICQS Serikin so that construction can be expedited.
“In Jagoi Babang, West Kalimantan, Indonesia, the ICQS was completed two years ago, so now we are just waiting for our ICQS to be completed.
“So, with the presence of ICQS Serikin later, the Bau area will become a transit hub for tourism and communication. This is our advantage, which is hoped to attract more investment in the future,” he said.
Henry, who is also Deputy Minister of Transport (River and Sea), said this to reporters after launching the book “The Bau Miners Uprising in 1957” at the Bau District Office here.
He added that the project is also important because it can facilitate travel between Indonesia, Sarawak, and Malaysia.
He explained that with the completion of the ICQS Serikin project, it will enable smooth passport travel, thus increasing the number of entries due to the shorter distance.
“Compared to border entry points such as Aruk, Biawak, Entikong in Serian, ICQS Serikin is one of the closest areas to Indonesia.
“Because of this, many people want the project to be completed as soon as possible because it can shorten their time at ICQS Jagoi Babang to Jakarta via ICQS Serikin and Kuching International Airport,” he said.
Henry had previously announced that ICQS Serikin is expected to be completed by the end of 2026 or early 2027.
