KUCHING: The 21st International Congress for Tropical Medicine and Malaria (ICTMM) in 2024 will be held here for the first time.
ICTMM 2024 is projected to bring a total economic impact of RM24.6mil to the region, and Business Events Sarawak (BE Sarawak) CEO Amelia Roziman stated that RM13.4mil would come from direct delegate expenditure.
Apart from that, she said an additional 1,952 jobs would be created through organising and hosting the congress.
“As the legacy capital for business events in Malaysia and Borneo, Kuching aims to collaborate closely with the congress committee to achieve a lasting impact,” she told the media at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on yesterday (July 17).
“Sarawak’s business events industry highly values collaborations, and hosting the ICTMM congress will play a crucial role in advancing tropical medicine advancements in Malaysia and Asia.
“Furthermore, the congress will position Sarawak as a prominent hub for scientific and medical collaborations.”
The event, scheduled to take place from Sept 19 to 23 next year at BCCK, is expected to attract over 2,000 scientists, physicians, researchers, policy makers and international authorities.
Themed “Global Responses and Interdisciplinary Research Towards Eliminating Tropical Diseases”, the congress is organised by the International Federation of Tropical Medicine and Malaria and the Malaysian Society of Parasitology & Tropical Medicine.
It is supported by various organisations, including the Sarawak Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, the Sarawak Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, the Sarawak Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Sarawak Health Department, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, BE Sarawak and Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB).The
congress will coincide with the 60th Malaysian Society of Parasitology & Tropical Medicine Conference and the 10th Asean Congress of Tropical Medicine and Parasitology.
This will mark Malaysia’s debut as the host for one of the world’s leading congresses in tropical medicine and malaria.
The successful bidding process was a collaborative effort between the Malaysian Society of Parasitology & Tropical Medicine, BE Sarawak and MyCEB.
