KUCHING: Ideas on improving facilities and infrastructure are welcome but, please, leave politics out of it.

This, in a nutshell, was the message relayed by Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng after getting a purported opposition-backed petition from residents of a housing area here.

He made it clear that there was no question about MBKS continuing to provide more and better facilities for the good of the community.

“If there is a request from any resident, there are many ways to contact us at MBKS. We have a consumer complaint centre and I even make a Facebook live broadcast where people can send suggestions for improvement.

“We respect any point of view because we need constructive ideas to improve the lives of our people, but no one should politicise these things,” he said.

He said this to reporters after attending the ‘Run to Save Lives 3.0’ event organised by the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Kuching Branch today.

Wee made this comment in response to the petition that was recently submitted to MBKS by residents of Lorong 2 of the Stampin Settlement Scheme, asking  for a basketball court to be built in the housing estate’s park.

The petition is said to have been written by Michael Kong, special assistant to DAP’s Stampin Member of Parliament (MP), Chong Chieng Jen.

Wee said he did not have any problem with the petition, but felt that the residents there should follow the right channels to convey their requests.

He said there is no need for politicians to point fingers at other parties who are actually doing their duty to serve the community.

“I have gone to the area to see for myself. We have discussed to find ideas on how to implement it.

“As a council, additional money for project implementation needs to come from the YB (people’s representative) of the area. We cannot just say we want to build this and that,” he added.

Wee also said those who want to build facilities can involve the private sector to do so.

He added that after the facility is built, the local council still needs to take care of its maintenance to maintain the facility.

“We will study the residents’ requests and do what needs to be done for the good of the people,” he said.
