KUCHING: Muara Tuang assemblyman Datuk Idris Buang has been sworn in as Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Deputy Speaker.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at Astana Negeri Sarawak on Friday (Feb 11), witnessed by Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Ragad Kurdi Taib.
The ceremony commenced at 5.20pm and ended at around 5.35pm.
After he received his letter of appointment Idris recited the oath of office and then signed a letter of oath.
With this appointment, he succeeds former DUN Deputy Speaker Datuk Gerawat Gala, who is now Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring).
Idris, 68, is a lawyer by profession and also information chief for Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB).
The PBB veteran was a police inspector in his early years.
He served as a chief political secretary to the Chief Minister from 2000 to 2006. From 2005 to 2011 he was as senator.
He holds a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) from the University of Buckingham, United Kingdom (1982) and was admitted as Barrister of the Lincoln’s Inn and as Advocate and Solicitor to the High Court of Sabah and Sarawak in 1983.
Also present at the ceremony were Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg; DUN Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar; Deputy Chief Ministers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian; Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah; Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah; Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin; and others.
