KUCHING: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) information chief and Muara Tuang assemblyman Datuk Idris Buang is set to be sworn in as Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Deputy Speaker today.

According to a press invite from Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS), the swearing in will be held at 4.30pm at Astana Negeri Sarawak before Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

Idris, 68, is a two-term assemblyman for Muara Tuang, winning the seat with a majority of 6,237 votes in a six-cornered fight during the recent Sarawak State Election.

A lawyer by profession, the PBB veteran was also a police inspector and grew up in family of policemen. He is also a legal advisor to the party since 1983.

Idris also served as a chief political secretary to the Chief Minister from 2000 to 2006 and was appointed as a Dewan Negara Senator from 2005 to 2011.

He holds a Bachelor of Laws (Hons), University of Buckingham, United Kingdom (1982) and was admitted as Barrister of the Lincoln’s Inn and as Advocate and Solicitor to the High Court of Sabah and Sarawak in 1983.

With his appointment, he succeeds former Deputy DUN Speaker Datuk Gerawat Gala, who had been appointed as an assistant minister in the new Sarawak State Cabinet line-up.
