SIBU: The Igan constituency is in need of a Voluntary Firefighting Unit as the closest fire station is 40 minutes away, says its MP Ahmad Johnie Zawawie.

He urged the government to expedite the unit’s approval, which is long overdue.

“I brought up the matter at the Dewan Rakyat sitting previously. I will speak to the minister concerned or his deputy again when he visits Daro on Aug 20 as the matter is of urgency.”

Ahmad Johnie told the media this when he was asked on the request of Igan folk for the setting-up of volunteer firefighters, which was voiced by the organising chairman of ‘Pedun Likew Igan Kubu 2022’, Mohamad Ali Kupon during the event here on Monday (Aug 8).

“Most of the houses in the area are traditional Melanau wooden houses and if fire were to occur, they would be destroyed in less than 20 minutes.

“I can’t say how soon the application will be approved but we will try to expedite it. While waiting for approval, one of the alternatives is to equip every house in Igan with a fire extinguisher.

“This is similar to what we have done for longhouses in the surrounding area where they were been given such equipment.”
