KUCHING: Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office (Integrity and Ombudsman) Datuk Talib Zulpilip (pic) has commended police assurance that action would be taken against individuals who instigate racial and religious issues. He said the assurance was timely to prevent such situation from getting out of control.
Talib was referring to Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Datuk Seri Abdul Hamid Bador who stated on Wednesday that those involved in stirring up racial and religious insensitivities, including political leaders, would be investigated and arrested without warning.
“It is heartening to hear that the police are taking a serious and stern view on those who incite racial and religious sensitivities,” he told New Sarawak Tribune yesterday.
Talib remarked that nowadays, social media has made it easy to commit acts and share posts that could touch on sensitive issues. He mentioned the unfortunate incident of May 13, 1969, whereby deadly racial riots erupted following the 1969 general election.
“It did not happen because of the over-zealous victory celebration alone, although that could have put the spark into the tense situation. There were cases of senseless utterances and acts prior to the incident.
“Therefore, we must learn from this sad experience,” he emphasised. Talib stated that it was the responsibility of all patriotic Malaysians to show respect for each other and exercise restraint. He encouraged cooperation with the police.
