KUCHING: A local man was fined RM4,000 or sentenced to 10 months in jail by the Magistrate’s Court here today (May 17) for possessing an unlicenced air rifle.

Odin Hasbi, 53, from Kampung Siniawan, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan to charges under Section 8(a) of the Firearms Act 1960.

He committed the offence in front of a premise at Jalan Rodway around noon on March 24, 2024.

According to the case facts, the police detained the accused and conducted a search of his vehicle due to suspicion. The search revealed a Canon Super Model 737-Cal 177 air rifle and lead pellets in the car’s trunk.

The accused was then arrested and taken to the police station for further action and investigation.

It was understood that the accused admitted to owning the weapon for hunting small animals such as birds and squirrels.

The case was prosecuted by Inspector Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang, while the accused was unrepresented.
