KUCHING: Those caught in the act of illegal dumping can face a compound of RM1,000 in accordance with The Local Authorities (Cleanliness) By-Laws 1999, said Mayor of Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai.
“We in DBKU see the increase in illegal dumping activities as a problem that is getting more complicated.
“If we want to clear an area, it’ll be a loss to us financially because we would have to hire a contractor to do so as all our cleaning activities are now outsourced.
“We request for cooperation from the public to not simply dump their rubbish anywhere.
“We would also like it if they can help us catch those in the act,” he said, adding that in this era of smartphones, it would be easier to do so via WhatsApp.
The Mayor explained that with direct and hard evidence in the form of photographs or videos, it would be easier to charge or bring the offender to court.
“Along with the evidence, they will have to tell us the details related to the illegal dumping activity such as where did it take place and at what time.
“If everybody can help us, then those responsible will be more aware that they are being monitored,” he said.
Members of the public who wish to report any illegal dumping activities may do so via DBKU’s 24-hour service centre at 016-8864466.
Earlier on, Wahap attended the monthly DBKU assembly for the month of April which was held at the DBKU auditorium here yesterday.
During the assembly, DBKU acknowledged the contributions of three staff members who have been working for 25 years with the commission as well as an additional three staff members who would be retiring.
At the same time, DBKU also showed their appreciation to two staff members for their contributions and service to the IPD Kuching in conjunction with the 211th Police Day last month.
Financial assistance was also presented to a former DBKU staff in hopes that it would help to decrease the financial burden of medical costs.
