KUCHING: An Indonesian man was sentenced to five months in prison and one stroke of caning by the Sessions Court here for entering Malaysia without a valid travel permit.
Accused Aswandi, 26, pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 before Judge Afidah Abdul Rahman in accordance with Section 6(3) of the same act, today (March 1).
According to the charge, he was alleged to be in the country when he was arrested at a grocery store, Jalan Stutong, on Feb 18.
Afidah ordered the accused to be handed over to the Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM) after serving his prison sentence.
According to the facts of the case, the accused was arrested by the police from the Kuching IPD Criminal Investigation Department in a raid at a grocery store in Jalan Stutong at about 8.30 pm on Feb 18.
As a result of the investigation, it was found that the accused had entered Malaysia and was in Sarawak without a valid permit.
The prosecution of the case was handled by deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Aiman Mutallib Mohamad Shariff while the accused was not represented by a counsel.
