Illegal logging foiled, two locals arrested

SIBU: The 10th Battalion General Operations Force (GOF) successfully foiled an illegal logging activity and arrested two locals in Kanowit last Thursday.

GOF Sarawak brigade commander SAC Mancha Ata said a logging area in Nanga Lupus suspected of carrying out illegal logging activities, was raided and inspected around 10.20am.

Inspections resulted in the discovery of 300 tonnes of logs of various sizes, three excavators, a generator and a water pump.

“All of the items valued at RM556,990, were seized. Two locals were also arrested in the operation dubbed ‘Ops Libas’.

“Both arrests and seizures were handed over to Sibu Regional Forest Department for further actions under the Sarawak Forest Ordinance 2015,” he said.

Meanwhile, in Serian, the 11th Battalion GOF team intercepted an Indonesian woman who was attempting to enter Malaysia via a rat trail (jalan tikus) in Salcra Mongkos oil palm plantation.

The woman failed to produce any valid travel permit and was ordered to turn back using the same route.

Mancha pointed out that from Jan 1 to 7, GOF Sarawak recorded seizures worth RM4,650 with three deportation cases under Ops Benteng.

Meanwhile for Ops Libas, the brigade recorded seizures worth over RM3,606,200 in three cases involving the arrests of seven individuals during the same period.
