KUCHING: Police seized contraband cigarettes worth more than RM7,000 in a sundry shop at Taman Sri Sarawak, Jalan Bukit Mata during a raid last Friday.
The raid was carried out by a task force from the central police station led by its chief ASP Ahmad Abang around 9.40pm.
The team found various cigarettes stashed under the display racks inside the shop and the shopkeeper failed to produce any documents pertaining to the goods.
District police chief ACP Awang Din Awang Gani said the raiding team found 37,960 cigarette sticks believed to be uncustomed and worth RM7,592.
“The shopkeeper, a 32-year-old Indonesian, was arrested to facilitate investigation into the case under Section 135 (1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
The raid was initially a part of an investigation and surveillance on illegal gambling activities but instead they came upon the illegal cigarette sales.
ACP Awang Din recently issued a directive to all police station chiefs to seek information about illegal gambling and take action in their respective sectors.
