KAPIT: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim clarified that the Federal Government’s fund allocation to Sarawak is based on fairness, not favouritism, aiming for balanced development across the state.

In his address at the Meet and Greet with Kapit and Song Leaders at Rumah Robert Nanga Sebatu Kapit today (Sept 29), he responded to criticisms from Peninsular Malaysia about the perceived disproportionate aid given to Sarawak.

“I am criticised in Peninsular Malaysia for supposedly giving more to Sarawak. But my response is simple: I don’t think I’m giving more, I’m just being fair,” said Anwar.

He highlighted the developmental delays in Sarawak, particularly in rural infrastructures such as roads, water supply, and basic amenities.

“Sarawak lags behind in many aspects, especially in rural areas. So, we help,” he said.

Anwar also commended the state progress under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“The Sarawak state government now has the capability to build new roads and other development projects that cost billions of ringgit,” he added.

The Prime Minister touched on the enhanced international perception of Sarawak, recognising its crucial role in the regional economy, particularly in the sectors of energy and technology.

“When I visit ASEAN, China, or Japan, they now recognise Sarawak as a state capable of boosting the economy with modern technology and sustainable energy,” he said.

Anwar emphasised the necessity of continued collaboration between state and federal governments to foster stability and shared prosperity.

He advocated for resolving issues through negotiation and collaboration, warning against the dangers of fostering divisiveness.

“If there are good proposals, we will approve them, such as the requested bridge construction. As long as discussions are held properly, I have no problem,” he said, adding a caution against parties trying to sow hatred.

Present at the event were Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Kapit MP Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
