SEBUYAU: The Sarawak Immigration Department arrested nine foreigners this morning for allegedly overstaying and lacking any valid travel permits to stay in Malaysia.

Acting on complaints and intelligence, the Kuching Immigration Enforcement Unit conducted an operation codenamed ‘Op Sapu’ at a workers’ quarters in a quarry.

The team inspected 28 quarry workers for their documentation during the surprise checks at around 2.30 am. Of these, nine were taken into custody and they are being investigated under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Immigration Regulations 1963.

The department assured that they will intensify their efforts to track down foreigners found to be violating immigration laws, especially at identified hotspots.

Employers and foreigners are advised to apply for the appropriate work permits in accordance with Malaysian law provisions to avoid any legal actions.

The public is encouraged to report the presence of undocumented migrants in their areas through online channels or directly to the nearest Immigration Enforcement Office.
