MIRI: The design of the Coastal Erosion Control Project in Kampung Batu 1 here will be improved to address the issue of wood debris surfacing along the coastline.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin highlighted that this problem has hindered fishing boats from smoothly navigating the waters, particularly in anticipation of the upcoming prawn-catching season.
“I have requested the Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID) to collaborate and submit a proposal for the approval of modifications to the Coastal Erosion Control Project to the relevant consultants.
“These modifications aim to prevent coastal structures, such as groins, from accumulating wood debris carried by the waves,” he said during his visit to the project site at Kuala Baram.
Additionally, Lee, who is also Senadin assemblyman, suggested that the groins built on both sides of the wave protection barrier should be relocated from their original positions.
“The groins need to be shifted from their original locations and connected to the main wave protection barrier to reinforce it, thereby strengthening the flow of seawater to prevent wood debris from accumulating on the shore,” he said.
During the visit on Friday, he said that the project was currently 98 per cent complete.
He also noted that king tides, which affected Kampung Batu Satu last year, have not recurred thus far.
