BETONG: Cash crop planting through fertigation or hydroponic techniques can improve the socioeconomic circumstances of residents in Layar constituency.

According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Layar incumbent Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu said this while attending the 26th Series of the Agriculture Community Outreach Programme (AgriCOP) which involved the handover of oil palm and pepper fertiliser assistance at Rumah Johnson Iba, Skatap, Layar here last Sunday (Nov 28).

On another note, the construction of Jalan Baru Skatap, Meribong, Nanga Jelau, Batu Lintang and Jelau Atas are in the final construction phase and will open up access to the land area of longhouse residents there.

Gerald added that apart from the traditional cultivation of rubber and oil palm, the less hilly area was also suitable for vegetable cultivation and catfish farming, which could generate faster returns for residents.

Meanwhile, Betong Division Resident Richard Michael Abunawas, who was representing Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, hoped that all entrepreneurs involved in agriculture would always be in touch with the Agriculture Department for advice and opportunities to receive assistance through programmes provided by the government.
