KUCHING: Keen to deliver, that is how one would describe the 564 athletes from Sarawak who will compete in the 20th Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Kuala Lumpur, from Sept 16 to 24.
The official handing over of the state flag to the contingent was graced by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg yesterday.
Sarawak will be competing in 31 different sporting events in this year’s SUKMA which will have a total of 426 matches to be held in five different zones or localities.
There are a total of 426 gold medals: 426 silver and 508 bronze medals up for grabs in this year’s Sukma.
With the famous battle cry of Iban warrior Rentap, Agi Idup Agi Ngelaban”, meaning fight until death, Abang Johari expressed confidence in the Sarawak contingent.
“You (athletes) are all our heroes; thus, maintain that spirit in every competition and that you cannot lose,” he said.
“Make your intention clear – that you are representing Sarawak and you must win! You are the stars of Sarawak and if you win; you are our pride,” he stressed.
Abang Johari handed over the Sarawak flag to Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development namely Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu who was also appointed as Chef-de-Mission (CDM).
