KUCHING: A Form Three student was given a pep talk by a police officer who was in the midst of giving a talk about crime prevention at SMK Kuching Town No. 1 in Kenyalang Park yesterday.
Sub-inspector Simon Low was dismayed that the student blatantly ignored his talk and played with his Rubik’s Cube instead.
Shinning his laser pointer pen at the student, Low calmly but firmly told him and the rest of the students that before the talk started, they were all supposed to be sitting on the floor.
“I asked the teachers to help arrange the chairs as I regarded you all as adults. I felt that sitting on
the floor is for primary school children.
“Now, as I have respected you as adults, I want to see you behaving like polite adults. Even if you are not interested in listening or want to know what is happening, the least you can do is behave well,” he said to the 130 students.
Low went on to tell the students that he was invited by the school to give the talk as there has been a rise in drug abuse cases and illegal online gambling.
He said their parents worked hard to put them in school and there is a time for everything.
“Be appreciative of what your parents and teachers did for you. One day, you are going into society
and you will understand the amount of hard work they put in for you so that you can get educated,” he added.
During the talk, Low gave an insight on being a police officer, and he encouraged them to join the force as a career.
He also warned the students to stay away from drugs and not to even try it once. On illegal online gambling he said much of it is linked to loan sharks and other criminal organisations.
Last Sunday morning, Low also gave a talk at Kuching High School which 250 Form Five students attended. He was also asked on the security aspect of the school by teachers.
