KUCHING: The state government is looking to put Sarawak on the world fashion design map through the inaugural “Best of Asean Designers” (BOAD19) event from Sept 6 to 8 at The Spring shopping mall here. Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said fashion events were a great opportunity to promote Sarawak’s cultural heritage as well as its tourist attractions. “In line with the Visit Sarawak campaign this year, the state government through my ministry is keen to nurture and promote creative talents in Sarawak,” he said during a press conference for the event here yesterday.
“We recognise that the fashion industry is highly competitive as trends come and go, and local markets are dominated by foreign brands. “Look for opportunities in niche segments where clients are ready to pay a premium for high quality and unique designs. “The ministry is therefore supporting fashion shows such as BOAD19, as they serve as platforms for designers to showcase their unique collections and engage with potential clients directly,” he elaborated. Highlighting Sarawak’s rich cultural diversity, the minister is convinced that visitors will gain a unique experience. “Kuching is a city with soul, a city of culture and art.
We want tourists to love our culture, our way of life.” Regarding the growing number of fashion designers, he described promoting Sarawak’s cultural heritage through fashion would kick-start the younger generation into putting together creative works that blend the old with the new. “Through this event, we are promoting fashion as an expression of arts and culture, as well as entrepreneurship among creative talents in this region. “BOAD19’s programme is an exciting mix of presentations, workshops, pop-up stores and gala show in locations across Kuching,” Abdul Karim added.
