KUCHING: The inaugural Sarawak Urban Forum (SUF) 1.0, organised by Kuching North City Hall (DBKU), will take place from Oct 20 to 22 at the Hikmah Exchange Event Centre (HEEC).

Themed “Social Inclusivity Towards Sustainable Urbanisation,” the three-day forum will bring together key stakeholders to discuss ideas and strategies for achieving sustainable urban development in Sarawak.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is expected to officiate the event on Oct 21.

“This forum is supported by the Sarawak government and the Ministry of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, with contributions from partners such as Urbanice Malaysia, the Asia Foundation, and Affin Bank,” said Deputy Minister for Utilities and Telecommunications, Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, during a press conference on Monday (Oct 14).

He mentioned that around 300 participants from government ministries, local authorities, community leaders, NGOs, the private sector, and students are expected to attend.

“The forum will feature 19 speakers from Malaysia and neighbouring countries, including Japan, Brunei Darussalam, and Indonesia.

“It will also host 18 exhibition booths showcasing efforts and innovations by local councils, government agencies, and private entities.

“In conjunction with SUF 1.0, the Smart 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) Community Station at Satok Sports Complex will be launched on Oct 20. This project, aimed at promoting recycling through a buy-back concept for reusable materials, is part of DBKU’s ongoing commitment to sustainability,” he added.

Dr Abdul Rahman noted that one of the forum’s key features will be the formation of three councils dedicated to youth, children, and senior citizens, allowing for direct interaction with DBKU to address the unique needs of these groups.

“For example, the Children’s Council will focus on issues such as playground facilities and safe recreational spaces, which will be discussed during the SUF Stakeholder Assembly,” he said.

DBKU mayor Datuk Hilmy Othman stated that the forum will focus on important topics such as the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), smart cities, low-carbon urban development, and the circular economy.

“All city residents are encouraged to participate in the Sarawak Urban Forum, which is open and free to the public,” he added.
