KUCHING: The awarding of incentives to gold medallists at the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) serves as a motivation for athletes and a recognition of their talents.

Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Adam Adli Abd Halim praised the Sarawak government’s initiative in providing such incentives.

He explained that Sarawak has produced many talented athletes who have represented not only the state but also the nation, reaching as far as the Olympics level.

“We know that Sarawak is one of the states that has produced athletes, not only for the state level or national competitions, but also for the world stage.

“There are many Olympians from Sarawak; we have never been left out. This might be one of the good initiatives, and other states are also offering similar incentives,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters after visiting the SUKMA Media Centre at the Pandalela Rinong Aquatic Centre here on Saturday.

Recently, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced that athletes who win gold medals at SUKMA XXI 2024 will receive RM15,000.

Meanwhile, silver medallists will receive RM5,000 and bronze medallists RM3,000.

Therefore, Adam strongly encourages the awarding of incentives to medal-winning athletes so that they feel their talents are appreciated.

Additionally, he also praised the host for the quality of this year’s event, describing it as impressive.

He added that the organisation of various sports events across the state brings the local communities closer together.

“We hope that throughout SUKMA, everything will run smoothly, gloriously, and will provide a good experience for young athletes during their time here,” he said.
