KUCHING: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Public Complaints Bureau (PCB) chief Wilfred Yap has urged the government to reduce bureaucratic red tape and simplify the procedures for those applying for government-related assistance.
He said this was to ensure these families were truly taken care of whether in terms of housing, jobs, income, education, or general basic welfare.
“There is an urgent need for the government to improve its targeted income support programme on its social protection programme for the most vulnerable, especially for those for households headed by the unemployed, low-income single mothers, persons with disabilities, and generally low-income households,” he said in a statement today (Feb 9).
Citing a recent United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) survey conducted in December last year, he said many households whose incomes were above the official poverty line were experiencing financial difficulties in meeting their basic needs.
He also hoped that the Perikatan Nasional federal government would prioritise ‘people over politics’ policies and provide more targeted assistance to lower-income families in urban areas to help them survive the Covid-19 pandemic.
On another matter, Yap, who is also Kota Sentosa SUPP chairman, continued to receive complaints and requests for assistance on various matters.
“Recently, requests for assistance for repairs of dilapidated houses were received from two families at Lorong 3 and 20 of the Stampin Resettlement Scheme. Such requests are always communicated to the higher authorities for further action.”
He hoped the government would simplify the procedures for those applying for government-related assistance including the repair of dilapidated houses.
