NEW DELHI: Indian carriers have suspended their Bangladesh flights after Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister and fled Dhaka on Monday.
“In view of the emerging situation in Bangladesh, we have cancelled the scheduled operation of our flights to and from Dhaka with immediate effect,” Air India said.
IndiGo airline said all its flights scheduled for Tuesday have been cancelled.
An interim government is being formed to administer Bangladesh, the nation’s Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman announced earlier.
A C-130 Bangladesh military transport aircraft carrying Hasina and her sister, Rehana, landed at the Hindon Air Force base near New Delhi, Indian media reported.
Indian national security adviser Ajit Doval met Hasina at the base, according to news agency PTI.
Hasina enjoyed close relationship with India during her rule.
The former premier is on her way to London, according to the Indian reports, citing sources.
Indian Minister of External Affairs, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the developments in Bangladesh, the reports said.
Meanwhile, the Students Against Discrimination group, which spearheaded the mass protests against Hasina’s Awami League government, called on people to refrain from any violence.
“We have to protect this country. All of this state’s assets and properties belong to the people,” said Nahid Islam, one of the coordinators. – BERNAMA
