MIRI: The Indian community in Miri have contributed in many ways towards the progress of the city. The former Deputy Chief Minister, Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam lauded the Indians in Miri for their proactive roles in engaging with various races and religions through their activities.

Chan said that it is crucial that all communities remain united and active in order to play a positive role in nation building, during the Deepavali night gathering held on Saturday night at Marriot Resort and Spa Miri.

In the event, Chan also contributed RM10,000 to the Miri Indian Association as funds for the community centre building near Jalan Kubu which is currently under construction. His wife, Datuk Lorna Enan Muloon, also contributed another RM5,000 to the building fund.

Chan also added that he would transmit the association’s request to the state government to chip in some funds to help them complete the construction of the building.

Earlier, the Miri Indian Association President, Karambir Singh, mentioned that the building fund needs an additional RM900,999 to complete the construction.

“We hope the state government can help us,” said Karambir. He also revealed that as part of their efforts to engage actively with other communities and Sarawak’s development, the association together with other Indian associations around the state are scheduled to organise a Sarawak Indian economic, educational and culture symposium in Kuching, next year.

“We hope to uplift Indians in Sarawak and contribute towards the state economy,” said Karambir. Among present Miri City Council Mayor, Adam Yii and PBB Mulu Deputy Chairman, Datuk Robert Laing. Miri has a population of approximately 1,000 Indians in the community.
