Indonesian woman jailed six months for theft

SIBU: An Indonesian woman was today (Aug 28) ordered to be put behind bars for six months by the Magistrates’ Court here for stealing cash money amounting to RM7,000.

When the nature of charge was read and explained to Jumaiyah Abdul Rasyid from Pontianak, Indonesia, through an interpreter, she understood the consequences of pleading guilty.

Magistrate Oon Kork Chern meted out the sentence after accepting her plea of guilty to the charge.

Jumaiyah pleaded guilty to committing theft of cash money of RM7,000 in a house at Pulau Li Hua, at some point during the month of July 2024.

Thereby, she has committed an offence punishable under Section 380 of the Penal code which provides for an imprisonment up to 10 years as well as liable to fine, upon conviction.

According to facts of the case, on Aug 13 at about 8 am, the complainant (house owner) found that the cleaner for the house had stolen cash money amounting to RM7,000 and thus lodged a police report for further investigation.

On the same day at about 2.20 pm, acting on Information received, a police team arrested the accused at Jalan Lanang.

Investigation outcome revealed that the accused worked as cleaner for the complainant’s house only on Tuesday every week since June this year.

Jumaiyah, who was unrepresented, admitted that she had stolen the money for her family usage.
