Indonesian worker found dead in hostel room

KUCHING: A man was found dead in his hostel room at Jalan Stephen Yong, Batu Kawa early Sunday morning.

Padawan District Police chief Supt Aidil Bolhassan said the victim was identified as Achmad Baisuni, 37, from Pemekasan, Sumatra, East Jawa, Indonesia.

He also revealed that the victim, a divorcee with a 12-year-old daughter, had entered the state on Feb 25 via the Biawak Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) entry point.

According to a roommate, he tried to wake up Achmad for morning prayers but the latter did not respond. At 6.30am, he tried to wake up Achmad again but when he still did not response, the roommate decided to contact an ambulance for assistance. He later informed his employer about the incident.

Achmad was found dead in his hostel room at Jalan Stephen Yong.

Upon arrival, police found Achmad lying motionless on a piece of plywood. Clad only in a pair of red short pants. He was pronounced dead by paramedics shortly after. Checks made on his body found no cuts, bruises or injuries.

Police have ruled out foul play and classified the case as sudden death pending results of a post-mortem.

Achmad, who was employed as a general worker, was staying together with seven others at the hostel.

His company requested for work permits for eight workers including Achmad on March 11. While waiting for the work permits to be approved, the company had placed the workers at the hostel.

“We will inform the Indonesian Consulate today (Mac 18) as yesterday was a holiday and efforts to contact the victim’s heir in Sumatra, East Java, Indonesia are ongoing,” said Aidil.

Meanwhile, Achmad’s remains have been taken to the Sarawak General Hospital mortuary.
