KUCHING: The Sama Jaya Free Industrial Zone has successfully attracted RM15.4 billion in foreign and domestic investments, driven by business-friendly regulations and robust infrastructure.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said that the industrial zone emerged as a key economic driver as it created over 15,000 jobs with an annual wage payout of RM758 million.

In addition, the industrial zone also contributed RM1.05 billion to the local economy in 2023.

“It is crucial that we maintain a strong infrastructure to support our industry players, enabling them to grow and succeed in this region,” he said after the first meeting of the Sama Jaya Industrial Park Management Committee (IPMC) at MBKS here today (Sept 13).

Wee shared that the Sarawak government has mooted the IPMC to be co-chaired by both public and private sectors.

This aims to foster strong rapport, mutual understanding and close collaboration between both sectors.

“The IPMC will manage and implement effective solutions to improve industrial park conditions and ensure long-term sustainability.

“While budget constraints may limit some initiatives, we need to ensure that Sama Jaya Industrial Park remains well-maintained to enhance its appeal.

“I believe that this will promote closer collaboration between government agencies and industry players towards more effective management of industrial parks,” he said.

Aside from that, he also encouraged open dialogue to be held between industry players and government agencies to address industrial park management issues.

Wee pointed out that the government, including MBKS, is fully committed to supporting and working with industry players from Sama Jaya to resolve those issues.
