KUCHING: Members of the public here are grateful to the Ministry of Finance on the soon-to-be-launched RM300 million e-Pemula programme.

The e-Pemula is a cashless transaction scheme for youths aged between 18 and 20, as well as full-time students in higher learning institutions, where RM150 will be credited on a one-off basis into their e-wallets.

The initiative was announced by Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz recently. It will benefit over two million youths nationwide.

Most people interviewed on this initiative from the government, believed the assistance would be able to help reduce students and youth’s financial problems.

Following are some of public comments on the initiative:

Nicole Frankie, 23, student

The financial assistance provided by the government has shown positive results. It has indeed helped the youths tremendously. However, we need to know the importance of financial management to properly make use of the assistance given through investments and smart spending.

Preston Patrick, 24, student

The financial assistance offered by the government will help the targeted youth achieve financial wellbeing. However, the recipients would need proper mentoring on ways to spend the assistance otherwise they would spend the money on unnecessary liabilities.

Johnson Fung, 24, contractor

I think it is the right move. Not only will our economy be stimulated amid the pandemic, but also students’ worries are lessened with extra financial help to ease their burden.

Felicia Riki, 18, student

This scheme is very beneficial for youth, especially those who struggle with financial support. It will help to ease their burden as they can spend it on their essentials. However, the negative effect is that the youth might actually be too dependent on financial assistance.

Lofrenska Fezzie, 22, student

Such financial support from the government eases the burden, especially for students. It helps the students to buy credits for their internet connection since the new norm of online learning has been established. Wi-Fi in academic institutions is provided for students but students sometimes face internet connection problems, interfering with their learning process.
