SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council may make it compulsory for all traders and their workers to be vaccinated against Covid-19 for public safety.

In saying this yesterday, SMC chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horh added, “We will offer certificates to everyone who has been vaccinated. Those who do not receive the vaccines will have their premises closed until they do so.”

Ting said the council felt that such action was important because the food and beverage sector was also a public service sector.

“It is the traders’ job to ensure the safety of their clients while restoring public trust in security,” he said.

Ting said that the plan was most likely to be implemented following the completion of the Covid-19 National Immunisation Programme Phase Three involving the public.

“Since the vaccines are provided free by the government, there is no reason for the people not to participate in the vaccination campaign,” he said.

“We want everyone to be protected. SMC wants the food to be clean and the environment to be safe.”

Ting also said that Sibu had over 700 coffee shops and many restaurants.

He added that SMC would intensify efforts to register all traders in its administrative area for the Covid-19 vaccination.
