MULU: Sports can instil a strong sense of spirit and discipline in students, helping them stay focused on self-improvement.

Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration, and Project Monitoring), Datuk Gerawat Gala cited athletes as an example, explaining that they need to train consistently to maintain their stamina and sharpen their skills.

He added that sports also foster a fighting spirit, where the athletes have one goal: to become champions.

“This same mindset will also be applied to their studies, leading them to become successful students and, in turn, make their parents proud,” he said during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Litumos Subzone Annual Sports Championship for Primary Schools (MSSR) at Sekolah Kebangsaan Long Moh on Thursday.

Gerawat further noted that sports can also offer lucrative rewards, pointing out that Sarawak athletes who recently won medals in the 21st SUKMA Games received incentives from the state government.

The Mulu assemblyman added that sporting events also strengthen ties between participating schools.

“I hope that through sports activities like this, we can nurture future state and national athletes,” he said.

During the event, Gerawat presented a cheque worth RM15,000 from the MRP project for the sports event, along with an additional RM11,500 for the Parent and Teacher Association (PIBG) of SK Long Moh to repair the sports equipment store and provide for other athletic needs.

To boost the morale of the teachers and athletes participating in the sports event, Gerawat also announced a reward of RM5,000 for the school that wins this year’s championship.
