KUCHING: The Kuching Inter-Cultural Mooncake Festival will be held for eight nights this year, from September 17 to 24, from 6.30 pm to 11pm at the renowned Carpenter Street and Ewe Hai Street in downtown Kuching.

The event is jointly organised by the Federation of Kuching Division Community Associations and the Old Market Community Association, with support from the Chief Minister and the Minstry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports. This year, the Snow Skin Mooncake competition will be among the limelights of the celebration.

This competition attracted participation from a cross section of the society last year and Siti Aishah, a Malay lady from Semariang, was declared the winner. This year, the organisers are encouraging entries from the Dayak and Indian communities as well, with the hope of making it a festival for all races to enjoy despite our differences.

Being the host to the Unity Arch, Carpenter Street has always promoted unity in diversity in the city. Having the moniker, City of Unity, Kuching will be able to continue its character through positive effort.

The competition will be held at the Plaza Merdeka Shopping Mall from 7.30 pm to 8.30 pm on Sept 22. Registration will begin at 6.30 pm. There are limited places so it will be based on ‘first come first in’ basis. All materials for the making of snow skin mooncake will be provided but decoration materials are to be brought by competitors.

Decoration themes must be based on your idea of the Mooncake Festival. Scoring standards are as follows: 25 per cent for textile clarity; 25 per cent for decoration; 25 per cent for crafting skill; and 25 per cent for hygienic.

Art experts will be invited to judge the event. Judges decision is final and no objection will be entertained. The first three prizes are RM300, RM200 and RM100 respectively, with seven consolation prizes of RM50 each. Those interested can contact Madam Pung Siok Eng (012-8865396) or Universal Electrical Company, Carpenter Street (082-410168).
