KUCHING: The Kuching Inter-Cultural Mooncake Festival takes place this year from Sept 6 to 13.

Co-organisers, Sim Kiang Chiok and Councillor Amy Tnay Li Ping, are calling for participants to take part in the festival.

Sim said throughout the years, the slogan of the event was ‘Sight, Sound and Taste’ and the festival aimed to foster unity amongst races or “unity in diversity”.

For the ‘Sight and Sound’ category, the organising committee is inviting artistic, cultural, traditional or modern performers and entertainers to come to the fore and participate in the festival.

For the ‘Sight and Taste’ category, the committee is inviting stall operators who want to sell food, souvenirs or any suitable products (to be decided by the committee) to come forward and apply for a slot in the festival.

Stalls are being rented out at RM320 each and all interested parties can call Mr Lim Chuan Chan @ 016-8661711 for the application forms.

The two organising chairpersons, Sim and Tnay are from the Federation of Kuching Division Community Associations.

They have appointed the Old Market Community Association members as committee members and they include function chairman Lim Chuan Chan and function advisor Penghulu Tan Heng Kee.

According to a press statement by Sim and Tnay, the festival owes its strength and virility to the endorsement of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“The chief minister has been our most ardent supporter from his first appointment as Tourism Minister. We would like to record our utmost gratitude for his continued advice and direction to help keep this event relevant and vibrant. The late Datuk Sim Swee Yong had been heading the event before his demise last year,” added the statement.

Both Sim and Tnay also thanked Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah for continuing the policy of his predecessors by sponsoring the festival.

They also thanked the relevant agencies for supporting the festival.

The festival will take place from 6pm to 11pm daily.

“This is to allow our hosts, the businesses in Carpenter Street to continue with their daily businesses unhindered and for all of us to have a joyful time at night with our family and friends.

“I invite all Kuchingnites to join us once again to celebrate our ‘City Of Unity’ together in merriment,” added Sim.
