KUCHING: The 15th edition of the International Sago Symposium will be held from Sept 23 to 26 at the Sarawak Tropical Peat Research Institute (TROPI) here.

Themed ‘Unlocking the Potential of Sago Palm: Towards Sustainable Food Systems and Environmental Restoration’, the symposium is dedicated to advancing knowledge of the significant nutritional and environmental benefits of the sago palm.

TROPI said the symposium is important for anyone interested in sustainable agriculture, food security, and environmental conservation.

“We aim to elevate the global status of sago palm as a vital, sustainable food source that also plays a critical role in restoring and rehabilitating tropical peatlands.

“Our objectives include raising global awareness about sago palm’s benefits, aligning its cultivation with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, and fostering international research and innovation.

“We will also focus on strengthening policy support and investment for its cultivation and use, and enhancing knowledge exchange and capacity building across various sectors,” it said in a statement.

TROPI added that the gathering is a unique opportunity to contribute to a global campaign that not only aims to end hunger but also to promote sustainable agriculture practices and take action on climate change.

“Whether you are a researcher, policymaker, entrepreneur, or advocate for sustainable development, your participation is crucial. Join us to share insights, forge collaborations, and drive forward the global recognition and utilisation of sago palm.

“Together, we can create a food-secure world that prioritises both people and the planet,” it said.

The symposium is co-organised by the Malaysian Peat Society (MPS), University Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Society of Sago Palm Studies (SSPS) and in collaboration with Nagoya University, Pelita Holdings Sdn Bhd, Craun Research Sdn Bhd, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), and i-CATS University College.
