I WAS not sure at first about where to undergo my internship. Applied to a few places but never got a reply. Even until my lecturer texted in our WhatsApp group saying whoever wanted to undergo their internship in New Sarawak Tribune may fill their names in the group.
I still wasn’t sure whether that’s what I wanted to do. I put up my name on the list at the last minute. I can say I was the last to do so and I am so fortunate that I got in.
I often tell myself why not get out of my comfort zone? Why not give it a chance to explore something new? Why not grab the chance which is already given instead of chasing something that I’m unsure of. Hence my decision.
Those who are close to me know that I don’t socialise much. I am a very quiet person who rarely speaks her mind about something or give an opinion even though there is a lot going on in my head that might contribute good ideas and stuff.
Going on to the first day of my internship, I was directly assigned to go to a function which is considered outstation. The function venue was at Lundu and it was about the Rambungan bridge.
Frankly speaking I was already frustrated on the first day. I did regret my decision but what’s done is done. Luckily two senior reporters offered to carpool with them to the destination. I was beyond grateful as I was very scared to drive alone to some place I don’t know.
Throughout my internship, I had the privilege of covering a wide range of high-profile events that shaped the region’s landscape and showcased its vibrant culture. From political rallies that ignited public discourse to cultural festivals that celebrated the diversity of traditions, I witnessed the power of journalism in capturing the essence of these significant moments.
Attending these events provided me with a front-row seat to history in the making. I found myself face-to-face with influential figures, engaging in thought-provoking interviews that revealed new perspectives and shed light on pressing issues.
It was through these interactions that I honed my ability to ask incisive questions and truly listen to the voices of the people I interviewed.
As I delved deeper into the art of storytelling, I discovered that journalism is not just about conveying facts but also about crafting narratives that resonate with readers. I learned the importance of captivating headlines that draw readers in, as well as the significance of a well-crafted lead that entices them to explore the story further.
Every article I wrote became an opportunity to transport readers to the heart of the story, painting vivid images with my words and allowing them to experience the events alongside me.
While my internship was filled with exhilarating moments, it also presented its fair share of challenges. Tight deadlines, demanding editors, and the pressure to produce quality content pushed me to develop resilience and adaptability.
There were instances when I had to work long hours, meticulously fact-checking and revising my articles until they met the high standards set by the publication. It was during these moments that I truly understood the dedication required to excel in the fast-paced world of journalism.
Speaking of senior reporters, all of them really did me a big favour in teaching and guiding.
I am grateful for the mentorship and guidance provided by the senior reporters at New Sarawak Tribune, especially Natasha. Their collective expertise and support have been instrumental in shaping my growth as a journalist. Natasha, the Chief Reporter stood out as a dedicated mentor who generously shared her knowledge and insights.
Even though sometimes I feel like I annoyed Natasha by always texting her asking about things. Well, if you don’t ask, you’ll get lost. Natasha guided the three of us including James and Abidgail very well.
Not to brag but she did mention that this batch of interns is the best she has had as we don’t give her much of a headache. That’s right, we survive on our own and don’t complain about whatever assignment assigned to us. The only headache I think I gave her is when I texted her a lot to check my work.
Natasha’s meticulous attention to detail and unwavering commitment to journalistic integrity served as an inspiration to me. Whenever I submitted an article for review, she would meticulously scrutinise every line, ensuring that every fact was verified, every quote properly attributed, and every assertion backed by credible sources.
Her dedication to accuracy and fact-checking instilled in me a deep appreciation for the importance of maintaining the highest standards of journalistic ethics.
The best part of my internship journey is when I was given the chance to attend the 19th Sarawak State Legislative Assembly sitting. Before this I only got to see it on television, live stream, or e-news. But sitting in the media room allowed me to witness the intricacies of the legislative process and reinforced the significance of reporting with professionalism, integrity, and a dedication to serving the public’s right to know. Not everyone gets a chance like this, especially as an intern. I am beyond lucky.
Working in journalism encouraged me to seek multiple viewpoints, to challenge my assumptions, and to approach every story with a sense of empathy and understanding.
We are also warned to be alert to phone calls from editors especially after working hours. That’s the scary part. Maybe they just need clarification about our news, but I am always anxious when someone comments about my work. But don’t worry dear future interns, you won’t be in the office as much so just answer their calls. A big thanks to the editors too!
As my internship at New Sarawak Tribune draws to a close, I find myself standing at the threshold of a new chapter in my journey as a journalist. The memories, lessons, and experiences gained during my time at this esteemed publication will forever shape my approach to storytelling.

With their support, I am confident in my ability to navigate the ever-changing field of journalism, armed with a commitment to truth, integrity, and the pursuit of justice.
Finally, my internship at New Sarawak Tribune has been a transformative journey which I wasn’t expecting since the first day.
