BETONG: Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the Sarawak government is always ready to cooperate with foreign investors such as Korea and Japan to develop the hydrogen economy in the state.

He said that for this coming weekend, he will have a visit to Korea to strengthen cooperation with investors there.

“In October, I will go to Japan to share my views on hydrogen as a new fuel source towards the energy transition from carbon fuel to carbon-free fuel in support of the world’s efforts to overcome global climate change,” he said.

He said this in his speech during the Sarawak-level Merdeka Day 2022 celebration at Dewan Sukan Tan Sri Datuk Amar Stephen Kalong Ningkan, Betong today.

He also said that Sarawak through Sarawak Economic Development Coporation (SEDC) Energy will also establish a research and development or R&D collaboration with Petronas to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from algae.

“The aviation industry produces a lot of green house gas which is one of the main causes of global warming.

“Airplanes cannot use hydrogen as fuel but bio-fuel can be an alternative fuel that is very suitable for powering aircraft engines,” he said.

He said he was grateful that Sarawak is a peaceful state and its people always strive to maintain unity despite different religions and races.

“Although, sometimes we have differences of opinion, but there has never been a big racial or religious problem that could cause division in the multi-race society in Sarawak.

“Sarawak’s potential to become a developed economy with high income by 2030 is very bright.

“Therefore, I urge all the people of Sarawak to strive and cooperate with each other so that this dream can be realised”.
