KUCHING: Isolated thunderstorms are expected in the inland areas of Sarawak until next week.
According to the warning issued by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), the isolated thunderstorms are expected to occur in the afternoon and at night from today (Jan 27) until next Thursday (Feb 2).
Except on Monday (Jan 30), there will be isolated thunderstorms in the morning, scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon, and isolated rain over inland areas at night.
However, Saturday (Jan 28) and Wednesday (Feb 1) mornings are forecast to be storm-free.
MetMalaysia also forecast that the weather will be fine on Thursday (Feb 2) morning and at night.
In the meantime, there is no issuance of a thunderstorm warning from MetMalaysia.
A thunderstorm is a weather event associated with the presence of lightning and thunder, as a result of the formation of cumulonimbus clouds.
Thunderstorms are usually accompanied by strong winds and heavy rain in a short period of time which can cause flash floods.
A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning valid for a period not exceeding six hours.
If the weather conditions are expected to worsen and exceed six hours, the warning can be upgraded to “continuous rain warning category”.
Meanwhile, according to Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), two temporary evacuation centres (PPSs) were open in Lundu district on Jan 25 following recent floods.
A total of 56 victims were affected with 39 of them now being placed at the PPS at SK Sebat PPS and 17 at the PPS at Kampung Sebat Dayak Hall.
Both the PPSs were closed today (Jan 27) at 1.40pm and the victims are safe to return to their respective houses.
