GEDONG: The Gedong Mini Isthmus Project will transform the landscape of the district and the Simunjan area, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“This isthmus is actually quite similar to the Kuching Isthmus, which was developed by Head of State Tun Pehin Seri Abdul Taib Mahmud near the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).

“Kuching has its own isthmus. We at Gedong also must have our own isthmus which will provide various public facilities including education, health, commercial and residential services,” he said during the presentation of compensations for the Gedong Mini Isthmus master plan project at Gedung community hall on Wednesday.

Abang Johari said Gedong will prosper when it is equipped with the necessary facilities such as roads, offices, accommodation and townships, as well as the Mini Gedong Isthmus.

For this first phase, Abang Johari said the infrastructure that will be developed in this district is the road.

“Next, we will develop schools, hospital clinics, training institutes such as Centexs, Universiti Putra Malaysia and Swinburne University which will provide modern agricultural training to our people here.

“We are also developing affordable housing in the area,” he added.

Meanwhile, Samarahan Division Land and Survey Department superintendent Mohammad Zunica Mohamad Sapi’ee said when the Gedong Mini Isthmus is completed, it can provide quality services including education, health and commercial to local residents.

“Besides opening up more job opportunities, this project will also bring socio-economic development in Gedong,” he added.

Therefore, he thanked the landowners and all the residents of Gedong for their cooperation.

A total of 82 landowners received compensation for the project.

Altogether 114 compensation cheques for a sum of  RM5.2 million have been handed over to landowners for the implementation of the project.
