KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said fair Islamic leadership in Sarawak has gained the confidence of all citizens, including the non-Muslim community.

“As a step towards achieving this goal, we (the Sarawak government) have established the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) to ensure the welfare of all segments of society is taken care of, regardless of religion.

“Here, we see that although our (Muslim) numbers are not large, let it be a light that shines, giving hope to all under Islamic leadership,” he said during the Sarawak-level Jelajah Madani Ulama and Umara Programme 2024 at Wisma Sabati here Sunday.

Abang Johari added that the Sarawak government’s approach is based on the principles of the Quran and Sunnah, while also considering local conditions that require an inclusive approach.

“We know there is night and day… even highs and lows, that’s why Sarawak models the Medina Charter, where the interests of both non-Muslims and Muslims are fairly considered.

“Therefore, Muslims need to set an example that does not affect the culture and beliefs of others, so that they have confidence in our leadership because we are fair. As long as this continues, God willing, we will be respected.

“If we Muslims show disunity, and we don’t consider issues that affect others, we cannot set an example,” he added.

Abang Johari also suggested that the role of ulama and umara in state administration be refined to ensure that quality and balanced education is instilled in the younger generation, especially Muslim children.

“We are the best community, and to produce the best community, education is a very important element,” he said.

Therefore, Abang Johari said he has established five international schools in Sarawak that will involve both Muslim and non-Muslim students.

He also revealed plans to establish an international school specifically for Muslim students with a curriculum based on the Al-Azhar and Cambridge syllabi, in collaboration with Singapore.
