MIRI: ‘Bubok’ (shrimp) season is a wonderful time for fishermen and those who make ‘belacan’ (fermented shrimp paste) because it means making extra money.

During the season, people look for fresh ‘bubok’ with the best prices at fish markets.

The most popular market for those searching for ‘bubok’ is the Kuala Batu 1 fish market.

Do you know that for fishermen to catch the shrimps, the weather must be warm and hot minus the wind?

“You will not get anything if it is too windy,” Yusuff Suhaili, a fisherman at the Kuala Batu 1 in Kuala Baram fish market told New Sarawak Tribune.

The fishermen at Kuala Batu 1 use two methods known as ‘ronda’ and ‘sobo’ in the local dialect to catch ‘bubok’.

Yusuff said that ‘ronda’ was similar to radar for locating ‘bubok’.

‘Meanwhile ‘sobo’ is similar to a bulldozer and it is in the form of a fishing net that we install at the front of the boat,” he explained.
